CSM Joel Crawford is a native of Clinton, SC. He joined the South Carolina National Guard while still in high school in April of 1986. He attended Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, SC graduating as an Light Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (MOS 63B) in March 1987. He entered the Army 1 March 1990.

CSM Crawford has served from a Light Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic to First Sergeant. Additionally he has been a Squad Leader, Senior Mechanic, Motor Sergeant, and Platoon Sergeant. His deployments include Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Saudi Arabia; Operation Uphold/Maintain Democracy, Haiti; and Operation Iraqi Freedom II/III, and Operation Enduring Freedom XIV, XVI, and XVIII.
His military education includes the Airborne School, Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer’s Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer’s Course, United States Sergeants Major Academy, Jumpmaster School, Master Jumpmaster Course, and the Combat Life Savers Course.
